Study compares minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries: time, cost, and success rates
The different types of minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries (MIGS)—Hydrus, iStent, Kahook Dual Blade (KDB), and OMNI—have similar surgery times, costs, and success rates when combined with cataract surgery, according to a poster presented at AAO 2024. The primary cost differences were driven by the price of devices and implants, rather than the surgical procedures themselves.
Conducted at a single academic center, the study involved 262 cases utilizing 4 MIGS techniques: Hydrus, iStent, Kahook Dual Blade (KDB), and OMNI.
There were no significant differences in surgery times between iStent and Hydrus (20.51 vs 20.70 minutes) or between KDB and OMNI (21.67 vs 18.14 minutes). Cost comparisons showed little variation, with iStent and Hydrus procedures costing $1,389 and $1,433, respectively, and KDB and OMNI costing $1,434 and $1,385.
Approximately 78% of the cases were deemed successful, with no statistically significant differences in success rates across the different MIGS types.
