Combination therapy shows promise for treating Demodex-related dry eye disease
The combination of topical ivermectin 1% and intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy significantly improves dry eye disease (DED) caused by demodex blepharitis, with notable reductions in blepharitis and meibomian gland dysfunction, according to a study.
The retrospective study reviewed records from a private dry eye clinic, analyzing data from 61 patients who underwent 4 IPL sessions at 2- to 3-week intervals while using topical ivermectin once daily for 1 to 2 months.
The study found significant improvements in meibomian gland secretion and a 77% reduction in blepharitis cases. Patient satisfaction and overall clinical improvement were rated as moderate to high. No significant side effects were reported.
These findings suggest that combined ivermectin and IPL therapy may be a promising approach for managing demodex-related DED. However, further randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm its efficacy.
