Demodex blepharitis linked to worsening meibomian gland dysfunction
Eyes with moderate to severe Demodex blepharitis show significantly worse structural and functional signs of meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) compared to those with minimal or no collarettes, according to a study.
The retrospective study analyzed case records of adult patients, comparing MGD markers, such as telangiectasia, meibum expressibility and quality, and meibomian gland atrophy, between eyes with moderate to severe Demodex blepharitis (collarette grade 2-4) and those with minimal to no collarettes (grade 0). There were significantly worse scores for telangiectasia, meibum quality, and gland atrophy in eyes with higher collarette grades, even after adjusting for age.
