Demodex blepharitis patients struggle with persistent symptoms despite treatment
There is an unmet need for more effective therapies that address the root cause of Demodex blepharitis rather than just managing symptoms temporarily, according to a study.
Researchers conducted a web-based survey in 2022 and analyzed responses from 113 U.S. adults living with the condition.
Patients experienced symptoms such as eyelid redness, dryness, and itchiness for an average of 4.3 years before the study, with a delay of over a year between symptom onset and diagnosis. Despite various treatment approaches, including off-label medications, in-office procedures, and over-the-counter options, symptoms often persisted or recurred, negatively affecting quality of life. Patients sought medical care an average of 3.9 times in the previous year, underscoring the ongoing disease burden.
