Ophthalmologists urged to consider discount platforms for high-cost prescriptions

Ophthalmology 360

Both GoodRx and CostPlus offer substantial discounts on glaucoma and dry eye medications compared to retail prices, with CostPlus generally providing slightly lower prices, according to a presentation at AAO 2025.

Researchers analyzed costs for common glaucoma and dry eye disease medications across GoodRx and Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company (CostPlus), comparing them to standard retail prices.

The study found that average prices were $54.00 on CostPlus and $64.51 on GoodRx. For glaucoma medications, retail prices averaged $124.88, with CostPlus and GoodRx offering savings of 57.7% and 55.9%, respectively. Dry eye medications, which are typically more expensive, averaged $225.66 at retail, with CostPlus providing 72.8% savings versus 55.7% on GoodRx. Overall, CostPlus offered lower prices for 11 of 15 medications examined, though the difference was not statistically significant. Varenicline showed the largest discount at 81% via CostPlus.

The authors suggest that ophthalmologists consider these platforms when prescribing high-cost medications.
