Frontloading visual field tests speeds glaucoma monitoring, cuts costs
Frontloading visual field tests allows patients with glaucoma to reach the recommended 6 reliable tests much faster and at lower cost than traditional scheduling, according to a study.
A prospective study analyzed over 10,000 SITA-Faster VF tests from 535 patients, most of whom had early or moderate open-angle glaucoma.
With frontloading—performing 2 VF tests per eye at each visit—patients reached 6 reliable tests in an average of 1.4 years, compared to 2.5–2.6 years with the traditional, non-frontloaded approach. In addition, more than 84% of eyes reached the 6-test goal within 2 years using the frontloaded method versus less than 19% with standard scheduling.
The study also found that frontloading decreased overall costs, primarily due to fewer clinic visits.
