Hydrus microstent reduces medication use in normal tension glaucoma for up to 4 years
The Hydrus microstent, when implanted during cataract surgery, safely and significantly reduces the need for glaucoma medications in patients with normal tension glaucoma, with sustained effects lasting up to 4 years, according to a study.
The retrospective study included 64 eyes from 40 patients with normal tension glaucoma who underwent Hydrus implantation alongside cataract surgery, and compared them to 39 eyes from 25 patients who had cataract surgery alone. Most treated eyes had mild to moderate glaucoma, with a median follow-up of 2.5 years.
At 1 year, patients with the Hydrus implant required 1.25 fewer classes of medication on average, and had a modest reduction in intraocular pressure. More than 85% experienced a decrease in medication need, compared to just 5% in the cataract-only group. These benefits remained significant for up to 4 years.
Over 90% of treated eyes maintained IOP at ≤16 mmHg using the same or fewer medications throughout the follow-up period, and no secondary surgical interventions were needed.
