Males, younger patients at higher risk for retinal detachment after cataract surgery

Approximately 1 in 500 eyes experienced rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) after cataract surgery, according to data presented at AAO 2022.

In this retrospective analysis from the IRIS Registry, data from 3,177,195 eyes of patients ≥40 years undergoing cataract surgery were analyzed to evaluate the 1-year incidence of RRD.

Overall, 6,690 (0.21%) eyes developed RRD, with males, younger patients (40-50 years), and eyes with lattice degeneration demonstrating an increased risk for RRD.

There were also higher odds of RRD with hypermature cataract, posterior vitreous detachment, and high myopia.
