Mini-scleral lenses improve visual acuity, quality of life in keratoconus

Posted on

Use of mini-scleral lenses in patients with keratoconus resulted in a statistically significant visual improvement, according to a study.

In this prospective, interventional study, VA and visual functioning of 89 eyes of 50 patients with keratoconus were examined to determine the effects of mini-scleral lenses. Patients who had undergone refractive surgery or corneal graft surgery were not included. Lenses used included mini-Misa lenses, Senso mini-scleral lenses, or Zenlens mini-scleral lenses. Vision-related quality of life was assessed with the National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire (NEI VFQ-39).

Mini-scleral lens resulted in a statistically significant visual improvement. By 6 months, 11 patients had stopped using the lens, with 7 patients citing difficulties with lens handling as the reason. Of the remaining patients, 33 wore lens for an average of 12 hours per day. In these patients, NEI VFQ scoring was significantly improved results for both visual functioning and socioemotional scales after scleral lens fitting.
