Presbyopia

Reliable visual acuity analysis in presbyopia achieved with fewer measurements

Posted on

Visual acuity curve (VAC) and its area (AoC) in presbyopia correction can be achieved with as few as 4 visual acuity (VA) measurements if taken at specific optimal distances, thanks to mathematical modeling using cubic spline interpolation, according to a study.

The study included 120 participants who underwent bilateral premium intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. Postoperative VA was measured at 9 predefined distances, and a mathematical model using cubic spline interpolation was developed to predict VAC and AoC values using a subset of these measurements.

Results showed that fewer than 4 measurements were insufficient for reliable estimation. However, 4 to 6 measurements taken at optimal distances produced accurate predictions, with a mean error ranging from 2.54 letters/1.74% (6 measurements) to 2.90 letters/2.9% (4 measurements).
