Race impacts retinal detachment repairs

Hispanic patients are more likely to face delays in undergoing rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) repair while women and minorities are less likely to receive surgical intervention for an RRD after adjustment than men and white patients, according to a poster presented at AAO.

In this retrospective study, 10,339 patients with an incident RRD between 2003 and 2019 were analyzed. Overall, 44% of patients were women 72% we white.

The final cohort included 2755 confirmed RRDs. Women had 20% reduced odds of RRD repair after adjustment, followed by Asian patients, Black patients, and Hispanic patients. Sex did not appear to be linked with delays in RRD repair, however, Hispanic patients experienced delays more often.
