Onset of neuropathic corneal pain post-LASIK often delayed

Ophthalmology 360
Onset of neuropathic corneal pain post-LASIK often delayed

In patients who experience neuropathic corneal pain (NCP) following LASIK, the mean onset of symptoms was delayed at 9.6 months, according to a study.

In this retrospective medical record review, data from 18 patients who developed NCP post-LASIK were analyzed.

Potential risk factors for NCP include neuropsychiatric conditions, functional pain syndromes, autoimmune diseases, and hypothyroidism, according to the study. Patients with NCP had higher occurrences of these diseases than the national prevalence.

Treatment was unique for each patient and most experienced clinical improvement.
