First FDA-approved treatment for MacTel reaches patients
Neurotech Pharmaceuticals has announced the first commercial manufacturing, shipment, and surgery for ENCELTO(TM) (revakinagene taroretcel-lwey), an encapsulated cell-based gene therapy for idiopathic macular telangiectasia type 2 (MacTel) in adults. ENCELTO is the first and only FDA-approved therapy for the rare, progressive retinal disease, which gradually impairs vision.
Company CEO Richard Small called the milestone “incredibly exciting” after years of development, emphasizing the potential to transform patient outcomes. Retina specialist Charles C. Wykoff, MD, PhD, who performed the first procedure outside of a clinical trial, highlighted that the therapy can slow photoreceptor loss and preserve visual function, offering new hope to patients who previously had no approved treatment options.
