Google searches for retinal detachment rose markedly in the United States
Public interest in retinal detachment (RD) in the United States increased substantially between 2008 and 2025, based on an analysis of Google Trends data.
Retinal detachment-related online search volume increased 178% between 2008 and 2025, with a significant upward trend over time, although searches declined sharply in April 2020. In 2025, search volume varied across states and was higher in states with larger populations of adults aged 50 years and older.
Retina surgeon density varied more than tenfold nationwide, ranging from 0.17 to 2.09 surgeons per 100,000 residents. Search-to-Surgeon Index values ranged from 40 to 406 and were highest in states with fewer retina surgeons. Population age distribution was not significantly associated with the Search-to-Surgeon Index.
