Dr. Marano helps a contact lens-wearing patient with blepharitis and chalazion

Matthew J. Marano Jr., of Marano Eye Care, talks through a patient case of an individual with blepharitis and chalazions who is a contact lens wearer.

Our practice really specializes in cataract surgery, laser vision correction, ocular health, dry eye, and diabetes.

Juliana Della Pello (Patient):

I came in a few weeks ago. I had blepharitis and 2 chalazion. I was prescribed Tobradex and an eye ointment. I’m here for a follow-up. They’re still here.

Dr. Matthew J. Marano Jr.:

How are your eyes feeling?

I still feel it…

Dr. Matthew J. Marano Jr.:

This young lady, like many contact lens wearers, was living in her contact lenses. Her eyes were, I would say, beat up, but there were little vessels growing. She developed little infections in the meibomian glands called chalazia in both lids. Then if you continue to wear your contact lenses with this, you become very uncomfortable. The eyes get red, irritated. We have given her some drops that have worked, steroid and antibiotic.

Then we also encourage her to use warm compresses. At this point, we’re going to redo the warm compresses, do them appropriately, and try to soften these up, and hopefully they go away on their own. We’re also now, since her eyes are much better, since she hasn’t worn her contact lenses, we’re going to do some measurements on her cornea called the Pentacam to evaluate her for a laser vision correction.
