Treating Irregular Astigmatism Caused by Corneal Scarring

Household cleaners are most often to the cause of ocular chemical injury in children, according to a recent article. Symptoms typically include sudden onset pain, epiphora, and blepharospasm. 

Irregular astigmatism caused by a corneal scar can be treated with gas permeable contact lenses or a corneal transplant. Keratoplasty, especially in pediatric patients, is not advised due to include risks of examination under anesthesia, higher incidence of graft rejection and graft failure, suture-related astigmatism, and higher cost.
