AAO Recommends Contact Lenses Wearers Switch to Glasses to Stop Spread of COVID-19
The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) has recommended that people who wear contact lens switch to wearing glasses in order to stop the spread of COVID-19.
Contact lens wearers tend to touch their eyes and face more often than the average person.
“Substituting glasses for lenses can decrease irritation and force you to pause before touching your eye,” said ophthalmologist Sonal Tuli, MD, a spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology on the organization’s website. If people continue to wear their contact lenses, continuing proper contact lens hygiene care is important. This includes washing your hands thoroughly before handling contacts and minimizing their contact with water.
In addition to limiting the number of times a person touches their face, switching from contact lenses to glasses may help protect the eye from infected respiratory droplets. The AAO advises, however, that they do not provide 100% security.
