Endocrinologists, ophthalmologists’ roles highlighted in TED consensus statement

Ophthalmology 360

The role of endocrinologists in the diagnosis, management, and referral of patients with thyroid eye disease (TED) was assessed in a joint consensus statement from the American Thyroid Association and European Thyroid Association.

According to the consensus statement, endocrinologists have several key roles, including managing thyroid dysfunction, diagnosing TED in patients with Graves’ disease, and referring patients to ophthalmologists, especially when a question remains regarding diagnosis or severity and in all cases of moderate-to-severe and sight-threatening TED. In addition, endocrinologists should participate in specialty care management decisions.

For their part, ophthalmologists should diagnose and confirm TED and make referrals to a TED specialist in cases of moderate-to-severe or sight-threatening TED. In addition, ophthalmologists should also provide after-hours emergency care of sight-threatening TED.
