Study compares 25- or 27-gauge SCILS fixation outcomes

More rapid visual acuity (VA) improvement was seen in eyes that underwent sutureless cannula-based intraocular lens (IOL) scleral (SCILS) fixation performed with 27-gauge (27G) instrumentation compared with 25-gauge (25G) instrumentation, according to a study presented at the 2021 ASRS Annual Meeting.

In this retrospective chart review, data from 69 eyes that underwent 25G (27 eyes) or 27G (42 eyes) SCILS fixation, were included.

At 1-year, mean preoperative logMAR VA improved in each group, from 0.95 ± 0.68 (20/178 Snellen equivalent) to 0.67 ± 0.64 (20/94 Snellen equivalent) in the 25G group and 1.43 ± 0.94 (20/538 Snellen equivalent) to 0.86 ± 1.00 (20/145 Snellen equivalent) in the 27G group.

At week 1, statistically significant improvement was seen in the 27G group, but statistically significant worsening was observed in the 25G group.

Eyes in the 27G group experienced a statistically significant reduction in IOL displacement and reoperation.
